Getting the most from your fertilizer dollar? Blends that improve soil balance can’t be beaten!

On one hand, soil balance is crucial for overall plant health, crop yield and other related reasons such as erosion and environmental stress. On the other hand, fertiliser prices have risen by up to 100% in the past year and are still climbing. This makes it more important than ever to ensure you are applying the right blends as you work to achieve an ideal soil balance.

The tricky part is that two soils can be composed of the exact same elements, but one has these in the wrong ratio and is what we would consider a poor soil, while the other has the elements in an ideal (or close to it) ratio and is an undeniably good soil. So, let’s examine the science behind soil balance and reveal the blends you should be using.

What Are the Four Keys to Soil Balance?

First, there are the cations – calcium, magnesium aka the king of all elements, sodium, potassium and hydrogen – which are the foundation of soil balance. Then there are the major nutrients (potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen and sulphur) and the trace elements (boron, copper, zinc, molybdenum, iron, cobalt and manganese). And, finally, there are the biological active indicator groups (various bacteria, fungi and yeasts). These are the four keys to achieving a complete soil balance.

The Importance of Cations

When it comes to achieving soil balance, cations provide a solid base and reduce leaching of nutrients – but only if the cations are present at the correct levels.

The Importance of Major Nutrients and Trace Elements

When they are present in the right quantities, the major nutrients and trace elements ensure that the plant or crop receives a balanced nutrition.

The Importance of Biological Active Indicator Groups

Again, when they are present in the right quantities, the biological active indicator groups enhance availability of nutrients to the plant or crop.

How Can I Improve My Soil Balance?

Soil balance can be improved by using a BioFlora® soil program. Initially, while correcting the levels of your cations and building your cation foundation. Then also by using it after all chemical applications, as an added stimulus to the biological component of the soil.

What is a BioFlora® Soil Program?

A BioFlora® soil program will be based around scientifically employing some or all of the following products:

  • BioFlora® GO Isolates® – a liquid inoculant that contains naturally occurring beneficial microbes and has been shown in both laboratory and field testing to improve soil recovery.
  • BioFlora® FULVEX® – a fulvic acid supplement with a high cation exchange capacity (CEC) that can improve plant strength/crop yield, as well as enhance nutrient uptake. We’ve already stressed that cations are the number-one priority when achieving soil balance, so FULVEX® is central to the program.
  • BioFlora® ISOGREEN® – a liquid inoculant that is a natural blend of micro-organisms and freshwater green algae, which has been formulated to enhance plant growth.
  • BioFlora® SEA ISOLATES® – a liquid seaweed inoculant that has been shown to provide multiple benefits, including its ability to improve plant-growth vigour and enhance plant defence.
